Tragic Hit-and-Run Leaves Mulund Family in Financial Ruin as Victim Fights for Life

Mulund Mumbai Hit And Run Case | One Dead-One Injured

incident Overview

Three weeks after a devastating hit-and-run incident in Mulund, 38-year-old Prasad Patil remains in critical condition at Jupiter Hospital in Thane. On September 7, Patil, a mandap decorator, fell from a ladder while working at the renowned ‘Mulundcha Raja’ Ganpati mandal when a speeding BMW struck the structure, causing severe injuries.

Medical Condition and Rising Costs

Patil’s family reports that his condition has not improved significantly. He suffers from multiple fractures, including serious injuries to his collar bones and legs, and his brain is unresponsive. Doctors have advised against a necessary hip surgery due to concerns over excessive blood loss. His medical bills have skyrocketed to ₹13 lakh, and his wife, Jyotsana, expressed their financial distress, stating that they cannot afford the additional ₹20,000-25,000 daily costs for outside medications and injections.

Struggles of the Family

Living in a cramped 120-square-foot room in Mitha Nagar, Mulund, Patil’s family comprises his elderly parents, his wife, and their five-year-old son. As the family's sole breadwinner, Patil’s absence is acutely felt, especially after his mother recently underwent surgery for a leg fracture and is still recovering.

Details of the Incident

The tragic accident occurred around 4 a.m. on September 7, when Patil and fellow volunteer Pritam Thorat were preparing the Ganpati mandap. Thorat did not survive the incident, succumbing to his injuries en route to a nearby hospital, while Patil was admitted in critical condition.

Current Hospitalization and Home Care Needs

After spending nearly three weeks on a ventilator in the intensive care unit, Patil was moved to a general ward on September 26. Although he is no longer in a coma, his condition remains precarious. Hospital authorities have suggested that he be observed at home, which would require renting a larger space and acquiring medical equipment—an additional burden for the struggling family.

Jyotsana expressed her despair, questioning how they could afford such expenses.

Accused and Legal Proceedings

The driver of the BMW, 32-year-old Shakti Aulakh, allegedly fled the scene but was later arrested by police in Navi Mumbai. He has been charged under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Although Aulakh denied consuming alcohol before driving, his blood sample is currently under analysis. He was granted bail last week, raising concerns about his lack of accountability for the financial and emotional toll on Patil's family.

community Support and Hope

Despite contributions from the local legislator and the Ganpati mandal amounting to ₹2 lakh, the financial strain is overwhelming. The community has rallied around the family, but significant help is still needed as they navigate this crisis.
